Axles & Differentials
Racetorations are specialists in rebuilding axles & differentials for Triumph TR2, TR3, TR3A, TR4, TR4A, TR5 & TR6. Both axles & differentials are components that can only be built using specialist tools, this ensures accuracy and reliability for the long term.
Over the past 40 years, we have developed a complete range of unique tooling to ensure the job is carried out correctly the first time.
We offer complete rebuilds of your own axle, differential unit or supply from our stock – a surcharge is applied to stock units.
Below, you can find guides to the work carried out on each axle & differential to ensure they meet our standards.
Axles – TR2-4
1. To begin, the axle is disassembled and checked for any damage to major components, such as the crown wheel & pinion, and is then cleaned thoroughly.
2. We then blast the external surfaces to remove corrosion. Any repairs that may be needed to the axle casing are also completed at this stage, such as leaf spring pads that have a tendency to be damaged are replaced.
3. The internal surfaces of the axle are then painted with an enamel paint which aids oil circulation.
4. The main differential unit is now fitted, using brand new SKF/RHP bearings (no copy bearings used) and seals. Brand-new crown wheel & pinions are also fitted if the condition of the original is below standard or a new ratio is specified. You can choose from either a standard open differential or a Limited Slip Differential (LSD) unit.
5. Once the differential unit has been built, the half shafts & hubs are assembled. We only use our uprated hubs and half shafts for this (AXL107). Timken bearings and uprated seals are used.
6. Before the installation of the half shafts & hubs, the axle body is painted in a choice of colour specified by the customer. If no colour is chosen our default is gloss black.
7. Once painted, the final assembly is completed and the axle is ready for either collection or shipping in a specially constructed case.
Differential Units – TR4A-6 (IRS)
1. The differential is first disassembled and checked for any damage to major components, such as the crown wheel & pinion. It is then cleaned thoroughly.
2. We then blast the external surfaces to remove corrosion.
3. The internal surfaces of the differential are then painted with an enamel paint to aid oil circulation.
4. The main differential unit is fitted now, using brand-new SKF/RHP bearings (No copy bearings used) and seals. Brand new crown wheel & pinions are fitted if the condition of the original is below standard or a new ratio is specified. You can choose from either a standard open differential or a Limited Slip Differential (LSD) unit.
5. Once the differential unit has been built the drive flanges are assembled. Timken bearings and uprated seals are used.
6. Before the installation of the drive flanges, the differential body is painted in a colour specified by the customer. If no colour is chosen our default is gloss black.
7. Once painted, the final assembly is completed and the axle is ready for either collection or shipping in a specially constructed case.
